In the new report, entitled “The Core Way Forward,” respondents identified their top four priorities for the coming 12 months as: growing loan portfolios, improving operating efficiency, managing new regulatory requirements, and adding new technologies and banking processes. The study findings are based, in part, on national data on contract pricing, terms and conditions supplied by Paladin fs.

Visa says its new online payment service, Visa Checkout, replaces their V.me online wallet that was introduced in 2012. The Visa Checkout service allows users to check out in a PayPal-like manner on a number of partner websites. “People aren’t looking for another wallet,” according to a Visa spokesperson. “They just want a simpler way to pay online, particularly on mobile devices, and that’s exactly what we designed Visa Checkout to do.” Visa also made available a Visa Checkout software development kit that enables developers to incorporate the service into apps for iOS and Android-based devices.
In the new IDG Connect, ForeScout Technologies - State of IT Cyber Defense Maturity Report, almost 1600 respondents around the globe said that they have experienced a significant security incident - 39% experienced more than two and 16% experienced five or more. Phishing attacks, compliance policy violations, unsanctioned device and applications use, and unauthorized data access comprise the top issues. The top five areas to which IT security practitioners attributed lower or no confidence ratings centered on making sure remote, external devices and users, as well as virtual machines, accessing the network can be detected, identified and maintained to appropriate security and configuration standards and policies.
Advanced Evasion Techniques (AETs) obfuscate malicious code by breaking it down into smaller pieces that arrive by different paths which then reassemble on an endpoint. Defending against AETs is difficult because many are sophisticated enough to bypass the detection capabilities of many firewalls. Security vendor McAfee (now a part of Intel Security) is offering a free tool that tests for AET resistance. The complimentary tool, dubbed Evader, allows IT Departments to build numerous test scenarios that simulate AETs and then see how those attacks can bypass a firewall.
Many security experts point out that security awareness is not the same as security training when it comes to employees. Security training serves to offer a structured set of rules, while security awareness aims to modify behavior. While security training can be done semi-annually or annually to appease examiners, awareness programs are a continuous process. Some organizations have turned to incentive programs to help combat phishing attempts. These programs allow employees to report suspicious emails, as well as emails that are sent as part of the ongoing awareness training. Monthly and quarterly drawings for gift cards encourage employees to forward suspicious emails to the Help Desk.

Kabbage and Kiva are two organizations that provide microloans to small businesses online. They and other small lenders have stepped up to help small businesses because many financial institutions view them as too risky and unprofitable. In fact according to the Institute for Local Self Reliance, microloan volume (loans for less than $100,000) fell 33% at U.S. banks from 2000 to 2012 and small business loans dropped 14%. Some observers believe that this situation represents a missed opportunity for community banks.

According to Javelin Strategy and Research, by 2018 138 million adults will access their financial accounts through tablets. They say that tablets are becoming the primary device used for a variety of mobile banking tasks, with about one in three consumers pointing to tablets as the mobile device they primarily use to email their financial institution. The research firm believe that FIs are not well prepared for the tablet boom and that they must strive to provide robust tablet banking apps, especially for the complex Android market.
Debit cards are the least expensive form of payment for merchants, while cash is usually the most expensive, according to the Aite Group. The numbers varied by specialty retailers, quick-service restaurants (QSRs), and convenience stores, but debit was always the most affordable option for merchants. A key reason for debit's relative low expense is its lower interchange rates compared to credit cards as well as the price cap imposed by the Durbin Amendment. The few financial institutions subject to the cap issue approximately two-thirds of the American debit cards.
PingPlotter is a good tool for tracking down network problems. The utility, published by Nessoft, tests connectivity to one or more target hosts on your local network or on the Internet and plots the results. The tool also measures "packet jitter" (the variation in how quickly packets are handled), VoIP Mean Opinion Score or MOS (an estimation of perceived voice quality), and standard deviation of packet transit time. There are three versions: 1) freeware; 2) Standard ($24.95); and 3) Pro ($199.95).
Arbor Networks has released new figures that show that massive DDoS attacks are becoming a regular occurrence. Arbor's numbers drawn from its Atlas monitoring of traffic through 290 global ISPs show a consistent upward trend on such volumetric attacks at every point on the scale in the last year, with a doubling in the number of attacks over 20Gbps compared to 2013. Huge 100Gbps attacks soared to 111 for the first half of 2014. The firm notes that “even organizations with significant amounts of Internet connectivity can now see that capacity exhausted relatively easily by the attacks that are going on out there.”
