Google is the most used search engine globally which means that no website would want to block Googlebot as they don't want to "disappear" from Google. Unfortunately, this makes life easier for Googlebot imposters. They do this by using Googlebot’s identity to gain privileged access to websites and online information. Incapsula is reporting that 34% of all identified Googlebot impostors were explicitly malicious, while 23% of these bots were used for Layer 7 DDoS attacks. However the company notes that Fake Googlebots can be accurately identified using a combination of security heuristics, including IP and ASN verification – a process which allows you to identify bots based on their point of origin.
