Hardware News

Some pundits contend that the PC is dead. Yet Dell counters with the fact that their PC shipments have been growing for the last five quarters. The company does not buy into the tablets-will-replace-PCs argument and is pushing ahead with both tablets and PCs. By some accounts, in next few months Dell will announce an all-in-one thin client, a commercial chrome laptop and a commercial 2-in-1 (a 13-inch Windows tablet with removable keyboard), followed by a similar consumer product, a micro-desktop and more.

The Pure Storage SSD SAN performs inline compression, deduplication, and encryption of all virtual machine data before writing it to solid state drives. Some of their configurations feature more than 100,000 IOPS with less than 1 millisecond of latency for both reads and writes. It also features a high 5.9 to 1 data reduction level, plus this SSD shared storage solution costs about the same as a hybrid/tiered SSD+HDD solution from larger providers. Pure Storage’s vSphere Web Client plugin enables complete management of storage within VMware – it can: automatically create, expand or shrink datastores without worrying about LUNs; see array-side capacity and performance of each datastore; and understand real storage usage through deduplication.

Software Updates

Microsoft has launched a Web-based security dashboard for IT professionals that displays a customized view of the company's past patches. Called "myBulletins," the dashboard shows the security updates for user-selected products, including the permutations of Windows, the iterations of Office and the various versions of its server-side software.

Finder’s Sensitive Data Manager can search across a range of systems for PII (Personally Identifiable Information). It is designed to discover any data that has social security numbers or credit card numbers, and then classify it so it can be handled appropriately. It can search unstructured data in any file type or image, stored locally or remotely on File Servers, SANs, NAS devices, and desktops running Windows, Mac, and Linux.

A small change to the Windows XP Registry allows users to receive security updates for another five years. Yet many experts are advising people to avoid the unofficial workaround for installing updates to the 13-year-old Windows XP operating system. By some accounts, Windows XP still accounts for anywhere from 16% to 26% of desktop OS usage -- second only to Windows 7. In action, the change to the registry tricks Windows Update into thinking that XP is actually Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 (WEPOS), which Microsoft will support until 2019.

ATMs/Kiosks

Novantas Data Services notes a trend that they are seeing with consumers interested in mobile banking: an increased interest in access to surcharge-free ATMs. Their research shows that two out five consumers who demand mobile banking insist on free ATMs as well when choosing a financial institution.

ATM scammers in Macau, a Chinese territory approximately 40 miles west of Hong Kong, used a sophisticated device connected to a small laptop to install malware capable of siphoning the user’s card data and PINs. They inserted the device into the ATM's card acceptance slot which would cause the machine to reboot and the malware to load. A few days later, they would return and reinsert the specialized chip card to retrieve the cached data, and then use a separate chip card to destroy evidence of their malware.

ATMIA has published a new Discussion Paper for Implementing Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and Foreign Exchange (FX) dispensing at ATMs. “Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and Foreign Currency (FX) dispensing are revenue opportunities for ATM operators and are services which can be added quite easily,” commented Mike Lee, CEO.

RemoteDepositCapture.com is predicting that the majority of all U.S. and Canadian financial institutions will be offering mobile capture by 2016. They note that financial institution's fears about mobile RDC losses are largely overblown. The small amount of losses that are occurring are originating from consumers versus small businesses or corporate accounts. The top six risk management tools cited are:

- 84% deposit value limits

- 71% image quality analysis

- 59% monitoring for mismatches between the check’s legal amount and courtesy amount lines

- 54% deposit volume limits

- 49% cross-channel duplicate detection

- 47% in-channel duplicate detection

In Forrester’s latest mobile banking benchmark evaluation of the top money center banks, Chase and U.S. Bank tied for the highest score. The research firm liked Chase’s mobile app for its broad transactional capabilities and the ability to reference branches and ATMs with geo-location, while they commended U.S. Bank’s app for its advanced capabilities such as mobile photo bill pay, pay an individual via the contact list in the customer’s phone and access marketing and research on additional products. However, they said that there is room for improvement in all of their apps, especially in regards to reporting a fraud incident.

According to Panda Security, there are more than 160,000 new malware samples appearing every day. So far in 2014, Trojans are still the malware most commonly used by cyber-criminals to infect users. According to data from PandaLabs, four out of five infections around the world were caused by Trojans, that’s 79% of the total.

A powerful tool called Card Recon from Ground Labs which searches for payment card data stored in networks has been incorporated into a malware program and toolkit. Unfortunately it is common for scammers to acquire a copy of commercial software via unauthorized means and then reverse engineer that software to circumvent the licensing mechanisms that are designed to prevent its unauthorized use. The program can validate credit card numbers by using a checksum formula called the Luhn algorithm.

BioCatch launched its eCommerce fraud prevention solution which uses behavioral biometric analysis to detect suspicious behavior and authenticate repeat visitors. The system transparently collects and analyses over 400 bio-behavioral, cognitive and physiological parameters by observing how the user holds and touches a mobile device, interacts with an online site, and responds to subtle hidden challenges. The company says that their solution can replace the CAPTCHA, as it automatically detects and prevents Botnet and replay attacks.

Technology and Marketing

Almost four in 10 young Americans would be happy to consider switching to a purely digital bank that has no branch network, a survey from Accenture shows. Of nearly 4000 people surveyed by the firm, 27% would consider going branchless. This rises to 39% among 18 to 34 year olds but drops to 16% among people over 55. Over 70% of survey respondents consider their relationship with their FIs purely transactional and not a source of financial advice. Their top five alternatives were:

- 50% Square

- 41% PayPal

- 31% T-Mobile

- 29% Apple

- 29% Google

MasterCard announced it is taking steps to improve cardholder security. The card giant says all of the credit, debit, prepaid, and small business cards it issues in the U.S. will now come with MasterCard's identity theft resolution assistance service, which hastens the process of canceling missing cards and alerting banks. The program also monitors the Internet to detect if customers' card numbers or other personal information have been involved in a data breach. MasterCard also is extending the zero-liability protection policy in effect for signature debit and credit transactions to also cover PIN-based and ATM transactions in the U.S.

Alkami’s ORB (Online Relationship Builder) include marketing functionality that permits banks to tag content. As customers click on items with tags behind the scenes, they will see other product offers with the same tag. Using Amazon-like technology, the system employs demographics to individually determine specific ads that will be presented.

The NetVanta 6360 is a Carrier Ethernet Customer Edge IP Business Gateway that collapses the functionality of a converged business-class voice gateway, an access router for data services and a Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-compliant Carrier Ethernet services gateway into a single platform. The company says that the unit simplifies the transition from legacy TDM to IP-based environments with analog or digital gateway capability, as well as combines support for hosted VoIP, Ethernet, SIP trunking, cloud services and WAN access termination on a single IP platform.

Slow page loads can cause problems for visitors as well as negatively impacting your SEO (search engine optimization) rankings. If your website has many elements on it, such as images, videos, CSS style sheets, JavaScript code, etc., it is worth the effort to make sure that it is as optimized for speed as possible. Here are two tools to help you test and increase your site's overall speed: 1) GTmetrix and 2) Google PageSpeed Tools.

Call Centers

Over fifty companies are actively involved in developing voice biometric solutions. They contend that voice biometrics can increase efficiencies and caller satisfaction levels at contact centers that effectively deploy the technology. They point out that passwords are far from optimal for mobile devices since they have small screens and keyboards, making it difficult to type. Proponents argue that voice biometrics can not only improve the call center and mobile banking experience, but it can also be extended to other authentication needs such as stronger out-of-band authentication.
