Sharp claims that their Infrared Color Night-vision Camera, model LZ0P420A, is the first security camera that can record color footage in zero-light environments. In action, the camera shines a near-infrared light on a target area so that its 1/3-inch, 1.3-megapixel CCD chip can capture color images. It can record footage in 1280 x 720 resolution at 30 frames per second. Pricing starts at $1,325.

RDM Corporation has introduced what it is calling the first IP-addressable network check scanners. The new EC9600i series scanners offer secure single-feed and small-batch scanning and permit IT Departments to detect where the point of capture for the scan occurred – not just at the work station level, but down to the specific scanner. The machines do not require specific drivers prior to configuring the scanner to the network.

The new Seagate Kinetic hard disk drives come with the capability to have their own IP address. The drive manufacturer says that their new drives eliminate the need for storage servers, allowing storage applications to talk directly to tens, hundreds or thousands hard drives over Ethernet. The new Kinetic drives have up to 4TB of capacity and use an open-source object-based storage protocol.

Software Updates

Kroll Ontrack has added PowerControls for SQL to its Ontrack PowerControls suite. Previously, Ontrack PowerControls offered recovery options for Microsoft Exchange Server and Office Sharepoint. The package enables drag and drop functionality. Instead of manually searching for and restoring the desired tables, database administrators can quickly query the snapshot or backup and drag the desired table into a new location.

Trunomi, a provider of Know Your Customer (KYC)-compliant technology, announced the launch of the company and the availability of its TruHub and TruMobile solutions. The company says that their platform helps banks on-board customers five times faster at 20 percent of the cost of today’s manual, inefficient process. TruMobile allows consumers to securely and directly manage permissioning, provisioning and updating of their KYC datasets and personally identifiable information (Pii) from their mobile device.

ATMs/Kiosks

Diebold unveiled their Responsive Banking concept at the recent Money20/20 conference. The model includes four features:

* "Smart" Glass and Dynamic Media - this includes advertising glass and video tower walls

* Queue Management - customers queue up for a session with a virtual teller or remote teller

* Cash and Dash Transactions - an NFC or a unique quick response (QR) code is used to authenticate the user and enable secure transactions at the ATM without the need for a card or PIN

* Intelligent Virtual and Remote Tellers - the ability to provide assisted service for more complex transactions

ATM Solutions offers solar powered ATMs that are capable of running off of solar charged batteries for up to seven days during power outages. If an ATM is off grid power longer than this period, the machine can switch itself off, and then power back once the sun is up and strong enough to recharge the batteries for the machine. The company has installed their solar powered ATMs at a number of sites in South Africa.

Millennials and high-income individuals are the most likely groups to embrace digital payments, according to an Accenture survey. Some 40% of all those polled reported having used their smartphones to make a payment at a merchant location, up from 16% in a similar Accenture survey from two years ago. Millennials and high-income consumers (people with a household income of at least $150,000) are the most avid adopters of mobile payments, with 52% of millennials and 55% of high-income consumers having used their phones as a mobile payment device.

A MasterCard spokesperson recently stated that several major national and international banks are planning to launch their own mobile payments apps next year. These implementations will most likely come via host card emulation (HCE) which was introduced in Android 4.4 “KitKat” and allows software apps to emulate the secure element chip found on some chip cards and the iPhone 6.

Peerlyst is a new website that bills itself as the LinkedIn of the IT security community. Their goal is to establish a place to find and compare security solutions, and to learn from peers' real-world experiences. Several discussion areas address questions, provide collateral, and cover the latest hot security topics. The site also includes customer-provided product reviews.

A new technique, dubbed Operation Huyao by Trend Micro, makes it easier for phishers to launch their campaigns. It not only lessens the time and effort needed for attackers to mount a phishing campaign, but it also makes such attacks harder to spot. The new technique inserts a proxy program between a would-be victim and the target website. It is only when the user actually attempts to make a purchase that the proxy program serves up a modified page that walks the victim through a checkout progress designed to extract personal information and payment card or account information. The key difference here is that the attacker is proxying back to the legitimate site on the backend to increase the believability of their bogus site.

Technology and Marketing

In Celent's new report entitled “Best Practices in Social Media and Mobile,” they recommend that banks should work to integrate Twitter and Facebook into mobile apps. They also recommend the formation of forums for customers to air complaints and questions to help contain and control issues as they arise. Some institutions have found success by centralizing issues and complaints and responding to them quickly and effectively with this strategy.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

November is the month where both card-present and card-not-present crime spike. Feedzai has analyzed data representing 17.5 billion transactions worth $750 billion and they found that in 2013, the 10 days with the most CNP fraud all occurred in November. Black Friday is the biggest day of the year for card present fraud. Grocery stores and supermarkets are the top targets for card-present fraud, accounting for 25%. For card-not-present, electronics stores account for 11% of fraud, and discount outlets 10.2%.

VASCO Data Security International announced two new DIGIPASS Authenticators with Bluetooth capabilities. The DIGIPASS 875 is a smart card reader solution, and the DIGIPASS GO215 is a compact, one-button device offering two-factor authentication and digital signing. Both devices provide enhanced security for the growing number of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets.

Internet Access

A hybrid WAN is a wide area network that is able to support both cloud and traditional premise-based applications. These configurations create new challenges for IT managers, including a lack of visibility for traffic off the private network, a lack of control, and an inability to optimize traffic. Riverbed says that their new SteelHead 9.0 addresses these issues by optimizing, automating, and securing the delivery of applications over hybrid networks. The system groups applications according to type and business priority to automate SLA enforcement for various applications. SteelHead 9.0 uses a combination of optimization techniques, including QoS and Path Selection, to calculate the best "path" on which to send an application.

Many telecomm experts believe that communication service providers (CSPs) with advanced Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks that enable a flexible MPLS VPN service will be best positioned to deliver enterprise class IP-based services, including virtual private cloud-based services, going forward. They think that those firms that are capable of bundling a suite of managed MPLS VPN services and can also effectively handle on-demand private cloud services will be the big winners in the future.

Call Centers

Some contact center studies show that the growth rate for home agents outpaces that of their physical counterparts and that the number of home agents will double in the next 2-3 years. Remote agent proponents argue that home agents generally perform better, stay longer, and exhibit greater employee engagement. This strategy allows contact center managers and HR Departments to draw from a much larger pool of well-qualified candidates who might not otherwise be able to accept a brick-and-mortar job, including:

- the disabled

- new parents

- veterans

- adults caring for elderly or sick relatives

- students

- retired people
