Hardware News

Thinspace Technologies announced the release of its new line of "zero-configuration" endpoint devices. The new Thinspace skyPoint thin clients are managed using their skyControl management system that features automatic device discovery, which they say eliminates the need for manual configuration. Under the skyControl management system, the skyPoint devices connect and configure themselves by communicating with a central server to download configuration information. Admins can centrally configure devices to run in a dedicated virtual desktop, or shared hosted desktop mode. Thinspace skyPoint devices can also be used as a generic thin client using Citrix and VMware.

Toshiba just announced a secure USB flash stick that uses a 10-number mini-keypad to authenticate access to data stored on the device. Like earlier model USB drives, Toshiba's new device uses USB 2.0 (480Mbps), not the latest USB 3.0 (4.8Gbps) interface. When the drive is removed from a USB port, the drive automatically re-locks and encrypts the stored media. Toshiba uses a 256-bit data encryption algorithm to protect information stored in the device's multi-level cell (MLC) flash memory.

Software Updates

LepideAuditor Suite is a solution for auditing multiple server instances. Its centralized platform delivers a single console for configuration change auditing of Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, and SQL Server. It includes a separate Dashboard Tab for each server and real-time collection of logs and parsing to convert them into intelligent records. It also shows in-depth details like before- and after-value of every change, as well as Permission Auditing to bring out any change in permission of Users and Groups. You can see the reports in three different views – Grid, Graph, and Calendar. Almost every detail about a change will be displayed. For Active Directory and Group Policy, you have the option to roll back an unwanted change.

Scheduling meetings can be a time-consuming task, but there are packages that can help. Pick is a relatively new solution that compares calendars in real-time to find a meeting time that works for everyone involved. Then, it suggests a time and books it. Meanwhile, Assistant.to works via email which avoids having to copy and paste in available days and times. The tool does it for you and then the recipient clicks on the times that they are available, which triggers calendar invites all around. Finally, there is Doodle which sends out a link to everyone who needs to be included in a meeting, and each person designates the times they're available by checking boxes.

ATMs/Kiosks

NCR announced the North American launch of the NCR SelfServ 23, a freestanding cash dispenser. The SelfServ 23 includes NCR’s new S2 Media Dispense Module, which has increased the capacity in cassettes by 17 percent - up to 2,500 notes. In terms of security, the company says that the SelfServ 23 protects potential points of compromise from insider attacks such as cash trapping, card skimming and dispenser manipulations on the ATM. To further enhance security, the CEN 1 safe body is exactly the same strength as the door. The safe provides 66 percent more resistance to full access attacks and 50 percent more resistance to attacks to remove a cassette.

Robocoin, the firm that developed the world’s first bitcoin ATM back in 2013, plans to offer a software development kit that adds Robocoin’s functionality to traditional ATMs. The company will no longer sell bitcoin ATMs, or BTMs, but instead will focus on their SDK and a public bitcoin wallet. The wallet, which began testing last Fall, is now publicly available, and will soon add enhanced peer-to-peer payment functionality.

Visa is introducing a new mobile service designed to reduce unnecessary purchase declines often triggered when consumers travel outside of their home area. Visa Mobile Location Confirmation uses mobile geo-location information to more reliably predict whether it is the account holder or an unauthorized user making a payment with a Visa account. Visa expects that the service will be able to reduce such declines by as much as 30 percent. To enroll in the service, cardholders download their card-issuing financial institution’s mobile banking app and agree to the use of their mobile location information for fraud prevention purposes. Mobile Location Confirmation will be available to U.S. card-issuing financial institutions in April 2015.

A survey by Strategy Analytics found that more consumers are satisfied using near-field communications (NFC) technology with their smart phones than express the same satisfaction using Quick Response (QR) codes. Part of the reason for the difference may be that consumers don’t have to open an NFC-enabled app to use it. Once the NFC-equipped smart phone is near an NFC-equipped payment terminal, the app awakes and is ready for use. With QR codes, the consumer must open and activate the phone’s screen, find and open the app, and then scan the bar code.

According to a report from Forrester Research, mobile wallet providers must focus on mobilizing loyalty platforms to create branded moments and transform payment options into a viable marketing channel. They are convinced that mobile wallets will increasingly become a marketing channel, and point to Starbucks as a successful example. They envision a solution that enables consumers to manage assets such as coupons, loyalty perks, gift cards and electronic receipts from several brands, in addition to facilitating transactions. They point to a survey that shows that 57 percent of respondents in the United States admitted that loyalty programs and points are the top feature in a mobile wallet, with 56 percent giving that title to discounts and deals.

FICO announced the availability of their FICO Cyber Security Analytics solution which is designed to detect emerging and evolving cyber threats in real time. FICO’s solution utilizes self-learning analytics and anomaly detection techniques that monitor activity across multiple network assets and real-time data streams in order to help identify threats as they occur. FICO Cyber Security Analytics can be used independently, or in conjunction with existing cyber security infrastructures, signature-based threat detection systems, and SIEM (security information and event management) tools.

The age of the Internet of Things - or IoT - is upon us. For example, IoT offers new and innovative ways for banks to better manage energy consumption in their branches. Unfortunately, connected devices historically haven’t been built with the protection levels enterprise administrators expect, e.g., sensors and switches aren’t unanimously able to support features like firewalls and antivirus software. In addition, legitimate network access is typically required by the vendors that monitor and maintain these connected things. Some security firms such as IDT911 are reminding organizations that breaches such as the one experienced by Target in 2013 — where hackers gained access through an HVAC vendor’s trusted connection — underscore the tremendous damage that can occur when sufficient security isn’t part of IoT initiatives.

Digital Insight has entered into an agreement with EyeVerify to offer Digital Insight customers EyePrint ID for a password-free mobile banking experience. By using the camera on mobile devices, EyePrint ID technology takes an image and pattern-matches the blood vessels in the whites of the eye, eliminating the need to recustomer and type a password. For banks, it requires no additional software or hardware and can help eliminate the costs associated with resets, lockouts and password-related calls.

Technology and Marketing

Deluxe’s SwitchAgent is an online service that enables consumers to switch their pre-authorized deposits and withdrawals between financial institutions. The company notes that based upon statistics that they have observed in the market, between 10% to 13% of consumer bank accounts are turning over on an annualized basis. (That percentage does not include net new customers, or those who have just become banked or who are under-banked and become banked.) The company's solution is currently primarily focused on pre-authorized deposits such as direct deposits, government transactions, etc, but they expect to add additional types of switches in 2015, e.g., moving bill-pay transactions.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

Visa announced that it is expanding the use of new security technology that replaces the traditional 16-digit Visa account number with a unique series of numbers, helping to prevent exposure of sensitive consumer account information in online and mobile payments. To date, more than 500 financial institutions have started to implement Visa Token Service. Meanwhile, MasterCard unveiled plans to invest more than $20 million in cybersecurity-related technology enhancements. This spring, MasterCard will launch MasterCard Safety Net in the U.S. The solution is designed to reduce the risk of fraud or cyberattacks before issuers and processors might notice the threat. It provides an independent layer of security on top of the tools and policies of financial institutions, by monitoring and blocking specific transactions based on selected criteria.

Elevate is an online lender that offers US consumers, mostly Millennials, RISE, a personal loan, and Elastic, a paycheck advance. The company notes that two thirds of their short-term personal loans are necessitated by auto repairs and medical expenses. The firm is trying to differentiate itself from traditional payday lenders by allowing grace periods for payments and not charging late fees. They also claim to work to provide financial education and help consumers build a better credit history.

Qualys Web Application Scanning is a cloud service that provides automated crawling and testing of custom web applications to identify vulnerabilities including cross-site scripting (XSS) and SQL injection. Qualys WAS also proactively scans websites for malware infections, sending alerts to website owners to help prevent search engine black listing and brand reputation damage. Qualys WAS only scans the parts of the website that have actually changed between scans reducing the impact of the overall scan.

Call Centers

Many contact centers have developed employee incentive programs to help drive service levels. Some programs rely strictly on monetary rewards, but many experts suggest that there are many other options that will help motivate and please agents. One option is to create a survey using a free program, such as SurveyMonkey or QuestionPro, and ask employees what their current levels of satisfaction are, where they would like them to be and what types of rewards they prefer.
