Tempered Networks offers appliances that create multiple overlay networks within an existing network infrastructure, securing traffic in each from all the others, giving organizations the capability to isolate sensitive devices from the Internet, for example, without having to re-architect the entire network. The solution facilitates the provisioning and management of secure, private overlay networks over any existing network via HIPswitch appliances. These devices are managed by the HIPswitch Conductor which is a scalable orchestration engine that coordinates configuration, security policies, trust relationships, monitoring and analytics of all of the HIPswitches.
Western Digital announced an expansion of their RE and SE HDD models up to 5 TB and 6 TB options. It also announced a new RE+ model that is geared specifically to deliver the industry's lowest power consumption, on a GB-per-Watt basis (it draws a meager 6 watts for the 6 TB model), for a 3.5-inch HDD. The RE+ is only available with a SATA 6 Gbps connection, which typically draws less power than SAS drives, albeit with fewer features.

Splunk is a software platform that enables organizations to search, monitor, analyze and visualize machine-generated big data coming from websites, applications, servers, networks, sensors and mobile devices. The company just announced Splunk Light which is a more affordable way for small IT environments to get started with Splunk software. The package utilizes Splunk technology for log search and analysis and is designed to be downloaded, installed and configured quickly. Splunk Light indexes up to 500MB per day for free, and will index anywhere from 1GB to 20GB per day for a sliding scale fee starting at $75/month.
Check Point Software Technologies announced Check Point Threat Extraction which they claim proactively ensures documents are delivered to a network with zero malware. According to the Check Point 2014 Security Report, 84% of companies downloaded an infected document in 2013. The company states that active content, embedded objects and other exploitable content are simultaneously extracted, and the document is then reconstructed without potential threats to provide 100% safe content.

ACG has introduced the ECS 4-in-1 which they say is the first anti-skimming solution on the market to offer combined device detection and jamming protection for DIP card readers. The unit is compatible with all major ATM brands. With the dual solution, not only does the sensing technology alert to tampering and deactivate the reader, but it also activates the jamming device, which provides continuing protection for the cardholder.
Wells Fargo has equipped branch employees with tablets, which communicate with nearby ATMs. When an ATM user is performing a transaction at an ATM and runs into a problem, a team customer is alerted on the tablet. Once they rectify the issue and tap "approve" on the tablet, the ATM completes the transaction. Plus the machines include technology that can send a user an email if they happen to leave a card in the ATM.

The recently unveiled Apple Watch has the ability to make in-store payments. When making a purchase, Apple Watch users can just double tap the side button, and the credit card appears on the screen. Users can then tap the screen on a terminal that is NFC-enabled, and when the payment is processed the user will feel a vibration through the watch notifying them the transaction is completed. Desjardins Group, also known as Mouvement des caisses Desjardins, is a coalition of banks headquartered in Levis, Quebec that just announced that they have an app ready to go on April 24, when the Apple Watch will be available for purchase.
Kofax Limited announced Kofax Mobile ID, a mobile capture framework that powers the capture and submittal of proof of identity documents. Mobile ID lets customers submit proof of their identity as part of an account opening or other process by taking a picture of their driver license, passport or national identity card using their smartphone or other mobile device. Mobile ID then extracts and validates the business critical content and submits it to Kofax TotalAgility, the company’s process application development and deployment platform, or the bank’s other enterprise applications for further processing.
Traditionally, ransomware only looked at hard drive C:, and then any other mapped drives like D:, E:, F:, etc., but now a newly discovered strain called CryptoFortress was discovered recently by security researcher Kafeine that has stolen the look and feel of TorrentLocker but is a whole new malicious strain. CryptoFortress includes the new and nasty feature of being able to encrypt files over network shares even if they are not mapped to a drive letter. Security firm KnowBe4 notes that this ransomware will attempt to enumerate all open network Server Message Block (SMB) shares and encrypt any that are found.
Dell's new Endpoint Security Suite offers a set of interconnected capabilities that secure data on employee laptops and desktop computers, through the use of authentication, encryption, and threat protection technologies. Organizations can elect to include the suite on the laptops and desktop computers they order from Dell, and the software can work on non-Dell devices as well. This product is Dell's first comprehensive security package for the enterprise and uses encryption technology Dell acquired when it purchased Credent in 2012.
Qualcomm’s new fingerprint scanner uses “ultrasonic sound technology” to look at a fingerprint in 3D instead of relying on a two-dimensional representation of the appendage’s bumps and ridges. The company says that this makes it harder for people to spoof someone else’s finger, and it might also make it easier to use the fingerprint sensor even with dirty or sweaty fingertips.

Conversations with customers can take many forms, e.g. in the branch, in the call center, via text chat or email, and social media. Many marketers believe the more conversations the better - more opportunities to build trust and cross-/up-sell. Westpac New Zealand is a firm believer in doing everything possible to open the lines of communication with consumers. Their success at doing so is impressive: previously their staffers had conversations with just 40% of their customers a year, while today, that figure is 94%, and they want to make it all the way to 100%. At the recent Bank Innovation 2015 conference, a Westpac spokesperson said that their personalized messages used to begin a “next-best” conversation in digital banking channels enjoy a 65% click-through rate, and that their use of responsive design allows all devices (smart TV, PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc) to run off of one platform.

According to a survey from Javelin Strategy & Research, nearly three quarters of Americans would rather apply for a checking account digitally than at a branch. In fact, last year the volume of applications on smartphones and tablets jumped more than 60% for auto loans, mortgages, and credit cards. However of the 3100 people surveyed by Javelin, 69% think that the branch has an edge when it comes to protecting personal data, and 60% think that it is better for getting answers to their questions. Mark Schwanhausser, director, omnichannel financial services, Javelin, says: "Financial institutions will win by ensuring that applicants feel the outcome was smooth and seamless even if even if they start the process in one channel and finish in another. Applicants should never have to start over from scratch."
IBM is looking into adopting the underlying technology behind Bitcoin, known as the "blockchain," to create a digital cash and payment system for major currencies. The blockchain - a ledger, or list, of all of a digital currency's transactions - is viewed by many as Bitcoin's main technological innovation, allowing users to make payments anonymously, instantly, and without government regulation. Unlike Bitcoin, where the network is decentralized and there is no overseer, Big Blue's proposed digital currency system would be controlled by central banks, by some accounts.
Many Web experts contend that too many banks rely on WordPress for their websites. While WordPress is free and easy to use, it doesn't provide the kind of security financial institutions require. They point out that the newest release of the popular open-source CMS package Joomla is a more robust fit for enterprise content management than solutions like WordPress. Joomla is a highly-extendable content management system (CMS) licensed under the GNU GPL written in PHP that readily scales from small websites to large projects. WordPress is designed around the paradigm of blogging; it works exceptionally well for that purpose.

CloudFlare has launched a Virtual DNS solution designed to protect and accelerate any organization’s DNS infrastructure. The company says that their service boosts the security, global availability, and speed of DNS responses without requiring organizations to make disruptive changes to their legacy DNS infrastructure. DNS infrastructures are increasingly becoming the target of cyber attacks, and Virtual DNS stops attack traffic at CloudFlare’s edge—blocking traffic before it reaches an organization’s name servers.
Microsoft announced the AT&T Mobile Office Suite deal with AT&T that involves Microsoft's Office 365 apps, along with unified access to voice calls, email, calendars, messaging, HD video conferencing, and file sharing, on almost any mobile device. The Microsoft Office 365 suite includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, plus Lync, Exchange, Outlook, and OneDrive, all usable from a desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet. Lync allows for domestic or international voice calls while in the United States.
The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) has released a new report entitled "How Cloud is Being Used in the Financial Sector." In it, they found that 61 percent of respondents admitted that a cloud strategy was in the formative stages within their institution, with 39 to 47 percent planning to use a mix of in-house IT, private, and public clouds, and 18 percent planning to use private clouds. None of the respondents have plans to be hosted mostly in a public cloud. The top services and features being adopted when moving to the cloud include CRM (46 percent), application development (45 percent), and email (41 percent), rather than backend services (20 percent) or virtual desks (14 percent).
By some estimates, the cost to hire a new contact center agent runs around $6500, so every effort must be made to hire the right people. Yet taking too long to hire the right people can be a mistake, according to research conducted by Texas Christian University and the University of Arizona. They found that the timing of a job offer has a direct impact on acceptance, performance, and employee turnover. Job applicants are more likely to accept job offers that are made quickly and that a timely decision tends to have a positive effect on the prospective employee’s performance once on the job. Plus, getting to a decision quickly means that your call center also has the best chance to hire the best talent before they take another position.
