NCR recently debuted Kalpana which is the company's new thin client ATM solution. Kalpana (which is Sanskrit for "imagination") is EMV compliant and has passed security certification for PCI 4.0. Every transaction and service the consumer sees on the ATM monitor is provided through an enterprise server, while the machine is essentially a thin client Android machine. NCR states that transactions and services created for the Kalpana ATM environment can also be used on existing Windows-based thick client ATMs.

Softcard, formerly named ISIS, has been acquired by Google. Google previously had wireless carrier Sprint as a partner, and now has relationships with Softcard's consortium which consists of the other three main carriers: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Google says that the acquisition allows its wallet to now come pre-installed on many more devices. It is difficult to determine how many consumers are Softcard users, but according to the Softcard listing on Google Play, the Softcard Android app has been installed millions of times.
DBS has launched a new SMS queue system for its branches in Singapore. Under the new SMS 'Q' system, customers can obtain a queue number via SMS prior to visiting the bank. They will also receive notifications on the number of customers ahead of them. As part of the rollout, there will no longer be standing queues at their full-service branches; instead, there will be more seats so customers can sit down instead of stand in line while waiting for their turn.
Digital Guardian has released Digital Guardian 7.0 which enables centralized data classification, policy definition and enforcement. Dtex Systems, which started in Australia 15 years ago, has just launched its insider-threat-detection software in the U.S. The Dtex platform falls into the category of User Behavior Analytics. Their technology has three parts: a micro-agent deployed on endpoints, a server that gathers the data from the endpoints and an analytics engine that sorts it all out. In action, the system monitors users’ behavior for 90 days to establish baseline behavior then seeks aberrations from it. To make the system more reliable, the company has created 330 behavior profile rule sets based on actual incidents that flag suspicious behavior.
LightCyber Magna works to identify suspicious lateral movement within a network that might indicate that attackers are attempting to branch out or elevate credentials before launching a full attack. Most perimeter defense programs do not care about traffic already within a network, which is one reason why so many advanced persistent threats remain hidden for so long. The Magna Platform employs Multivariate Adaptive Detection to help identify anomalous attack behavior across the entire attack lifecycle using broad data inputs, including network traffic (using DPI) and endpoint state.

Zafin has launched a new cloud-based analytics solution with an initial focus on optimizing the effectiveness of card loyalty programs. The company's miInsights module seeks to optimize each stage of the card loyalty lifecycle, including acquisition, increasing card usage, and retention and sustained engagement. Zafin has developed the patent-pending Customer Engagement Score (CES), a scientific measurement of the engagement level of customers. Unique to each customer, this score is calculated based on a range of inputs, including transaction activities, product usage, depth of relationship with the bank, and redemption activities. The company says that their loyalty analytics solution will be followed by other modules covering the areas of pricing analytics, wealth performance analytics, and customer analytics.

Even as the number of ways to pay digitally has expanded dramatically in recent years, the growth in the supply of U.S. dollars shows little sign of slowing. Adjusting for inflation and population, the value of U.S. small bills in circulation has declined a mere 1.8% over the past 20 years. Not surprisingly, those most likely to use cash are lower-income households. Households making less than $25,000 a year use cash 55% of the time, while households making more than $200,000 use cash 10% of the time. Somewhat surprisingly, 40% of young people ages 18 to 24 prefer cash, compared with their 45- to 64-year old parents, who prefer to use it 25% to 32% of the time.
The EMV Migration Forum has released a guide, “Recommended Communications Best Practices,” which provides a step-by-step resource for issuers and merchants to develop effective messaging and education approaches during the U.S. migration to chip technology. The guide recommends a consistent, continuous and multi-channel approach to provide specific details on chip technology use and security benefits within each stage of the migration. For issuers, there are various channels to reach their cardholders with educational materials, including: card carriers, statement inserts, ATMs, branches, call centers, Internet, advertising, social media, email and direct mail.
Fastacash, which launched in 2012, has formed a partnership with Visa Europe. Fastacash's technology supports the sending of money (as well as photos or files) quickly and inexpensively between countries via social media channels, including messaging apps. Supported platforms include Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Whatsapp, and others. For now the deal does not extend to Visa cardholders outside of Europe.

The Federal Communications Commission just voted to add three open Internet conduct rules that block broadband providers, both wired and wireless, from blocking or throttling Internet traffic. The rules also ban broadband providers from taking payments to prioritize content and services over their networks. Many observers say banks would not immediately be impacted by the net neutrality plan, but keeping the Internet open would prevent carriers from "throttling" sites of financial institutions offering similar products or charging certain FIs more for faster online service.
Video conferencing removes distance barriers to improve productivity among geographically scattered teams, and is also making headway among FIs looking to provide access to investment, small business, and mortgage subject matter experts (SMEs) via teleconference stations at branches. While costs remain an issue, some institutions are turning to SaaS and cloud-based videoconferencing systems in conjunction with managed video services as a way to affordably implement video systems. Video managed service providers such as Yorktel can handle everything from system planning and deployment to monitoring and preventative maintenance.
