WatchGuard Technologies announced hardware upgrades to its Firebox M Series to handle the rapid proliferation of encrypted web traffic and offer more flexibility with added copper and fiber ports. With the new M470, M570 and M670 appliances, users can add additional network modules to increase the number of copper or fiber ports. The new Firebox M Series appliances also enable users to inspect encrypted traffic with all security services enabled. The company claims that their updated Firebox M370 performs full HTTPS inspection 94 percent faster than competing solutions.

Successful consumer engagement and marketing are major hurdles for many small businesses. Microsoft is adding tools to Office 365 to help them overcome those hurdles.
Three new applications rolling out to Microsoft Office 365 Business Premium subscribers include:
ATMIA has published "Maximizing ATM Accessibility" which is a new guide for incorporating greater access for all users, including those with disadvantages. Building on previous publications, such as "Recommendations on ATM User Interface" (2014) and "ATM Biometric Security Best Practices" (2016), the manual addresses ways to improve access for users with personal impairments.
The company says that thier new A-Series with Display improves speed and accuracy with an extra-large, 30-character display featuring icons, images, and text. A built-in USB port allows real-time download of up to 1,000 events from multiple locks, and an optional one-time code app enables faster access without calling dispatch.
As Gadget noted, voice technology specifically and artificial intelligence generally will give FIs a fresh opportunity to customize their banking experience with tailored recommendations and advice, such as suggesting ways to save more if it detects a person has had a salary increase. So far, we’ve seen two very different approaches to voice recognition technology in banking. One leverages it for identification and security while the other is driven by a vision of customer service. But going forward, if voice is to be the next big banking thing, FIs are going to need to get past the novelty factor and leverage this technology for both security and convenience.
For most industries, Wi-Fi is now a must-have technology because it powers IoT, customer service, and mobility, and it should be thought of as one of the core pillars of digital transformation. Getting Wi-Fi everywhere can be an expensive, complicated process for many organizations. Products like the Aerohive AP150W make the expansion of Wi-Fi simple and cost effective, giving organizations no excuse for having poor quality wireless access.
"Combined, Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay account for only about one quarter of 1% of US debit transactions," the annual Debit Issuer Study from debit and ATM network Pulse has found, while the country's move to EMV chip cards has cut debit card fraud loss rates but "fraud continues to challenge issuers."
Alert Logic announced the availability of its 2017 Cloud Security Report. The report analyzes customer data from more than 3,800 Alert Logic cloud, on-premises and hybrid cloud customers over an 18-month period. Some of the top findings in the report include the following:
The quality of the iris recognition feature also bodes well for people that don't like using fingerprint scanners on smartphones. Princeton Identity, the company behind the Galaxy S8’s iris recognition, said that the FBI "uses 13 points of identification per fingerprint, so with all 10 fingers you might have 130 unique identifiers." Meanwhile, the Galaxy S8's iris scanner can register up to 200 identifying features from a single iris. And keep in mind that the Galaxy S8 scans both eyes, which means it actually registers 400 identifying features from your eyes.
Cisco, IBM, Symantec and McAfee lead the cybersecurity vendors in mind share, but the race has just begun.

When used strategically, a merchandising program can establish powerful, personal, and long-lasting relationships. The more you can reach people through sight, sound, touch and interactivity, the more relevant you become, resulting in the opportunity to establish a strong emotional connection with your branch visitors.
According to the 2017 Debit Issuer Study, commissioned by PULSE, one of the nation’s leading debit/ATM networks, American FIs substantially increased issuance of chip debit cards in 2016 and experienced reduced fraud losses. Since the fraud liability shift for most debit transactions took effect in 2015, an estimated 80 percent of debit cards have been converted to chip cards. The study also found that fraud loss rates dropped by approximately 28 percent in 2016 compared to 2015 levels.
Alternative lenders, many based in Silicon Valley or Silicon Alley, are tech-driven and agile — and often promise lightning-quick approvals delivered via smooth user interfaces. However, the alternative share of the lending market is not huge, compared to traditional lending market. For example, the entire mortgage market in the U.S. is worth upwards of $1 trillion, while alternative lenders have an $800 million share. Of the consumer lending market of $450 billion, $15.4 billion belongs to alternative lenders.
Microsoft recently unveiled Coco Framework to make blockchain-based systems faster and secure. The name "Coco" represents Confidential Consortium. It will be available as open source software by 2018. The framework will connect different blockchain networks to address issues related to slowdown of the technology's adoption rate and speed as well as privacy concerns. The basic idea of Coco is to increase the number of transactions that the technology can handle per second, thereby accelerating the efficiency of the system.
SWIFT announced that it will provide U.S. institutions with a gateway to The Clearing House’s real-time payments (RTP) platform. As instant payments become more ubiquitous in the U.S., SWIFT will provide an interface to manage the requirements of sending and receiving domestic instant payment transactions on behalf of customers.
The future network will not have tunnels or WANs or tags. The future network will provide secure packet routing from any private network to any private network through any number of IPv4 and IPv6 networks. The existing networks (private and public) will not change physically, but adding intelligence to routers at the edges will transform the internet from millions of separately managed networks connected by NATs to one large multi-network routing system with end-to-end controls.
In a new type of DDoS attack, skilled bad actors use pulse wave DDoS assaults to exploit weaknesses in appliance-first hybrid mitigation solutions and pin down multiple targets. Most DDoS attacks ramp up slowly, giving “appliance first hybrid mitigation” solutions the required several minutes to complete the cloud activation and the traffic failover. However, the first burst from a pulse wave DDoS attack immediately cuts off all syncing and congests the network pipe.
In today’s cloud-first, high bandwidth world, we are on the cusp of considering WAN optimization to be extinct. Given the availability of low-cost, high-bandwidth links, and, the pervasive use of SSL/TLS with cloud applications, SD-WAN has taken over as the new standard for performance and reliability in modern networks.
