Members of the MoneyTaker group, named after a piece of custom malware it uses, have netted around $10 million in ATM heists around the globe. They penetrated an unnamed US bank, according to researchers with Group-IB in a report titled MoneyTaker: 1.5 Years of Silent Operations. They then used their unauthorized access to control a workstation the bank used to connect to the First Data STAR Network, which more than 5,000 FIs use to transact payments involving debit cards.
How Blockchain Could Choke off ATM Money-Laundering
The power of blockchain technology is driven by the network nodes. Each node could be a market participant — i.e., tax authorities, company registries, law enforcement bureaus, media houses, judicial bodies, FIs and corporates. This implies collaboration among market participant to develop a mutually beneficial solution. On the other hand, the KYC and AML space is a domain of enormous risk and, hence, investment. FIs and fintechs are now exploring this challenge, but it is not entirely clear yet how the particular blockchain use-case will evolve.

GreatHorn Helps Detect the Most Carefully Planned Email Attacks
GreatHorn was designed to help close the security gap that exists in the form of social engineering phishing attacks, as well as lock down the rest of the mail stream, which remains one of the most popular avenues for launching cyber attacks. GreatHorn is a software as a service (SaaS) product that exists inside the cloud. It is meant to work particularly well with Microsoft Azure, where it can run in tandem with a corporate mail server for Office 365 users. But it is also designed to work elsewhere.

How Google Fiber Turned 2017 into Its Comeback Year
Google Fiber showed new life in 2017, after a near death experience in late 2016. It also began to heavily rely on shallow trenching, a new method of laying cables, to expedite the construction process. The next big gamechanger? The rollout of 5G, which will give providers more wireless to potentially play with in cities and hard-to-reach rural areas. In five US cities in 2018, Verizon plans to roll out 5G fixed wireless, which will compete directly with fiber in speed and low latency.
