British FI Monzo is using NFC (near field communication) to activate their Monzo debit card just by tapping it on a mobile phone. They read the NFC tag and check whether it has the expected data about the card, and from there they extract the PAN number i.e. the long number on the front of your card. The PAN number is then sent to Monzo's backend servers, and used to activate the card.

The Clearing House’s much-anticipated real-time payments system, dubbed RTP, just went live, ushering in a new era of faster electronic payments in the United States. RTP is the “first new core payments infrastructure in the U.S. in more than 40 years,” according to The Clearing House.
