Consumers and U.S. ATM Industry Petition VISA to Lift Ban on Dynamic Currency Conversion Services

A public petition on behalf of consumers and the U.S. ATM industry, has been formally submitted to VISA by The National ATM Council ("NAC"), seeking elimination of current network rules prohibiting Dynamic Currency Conversion ("DCC") services for international VISA cardholders using ATMs in the U.S. "DCC services provide the transparency and real-time information needed by consumers from abroad to better understand their cash withdrawals from U.S. ATMs in terms of the cardholder's home currency," said Bruce Renard, Executive Director for NAC. "Importantly, with DCC, the cardholder is given this consumer-friendly information, along with an opportunity to opt out of the transaction once the currency conversion information has been provided."

Millennials SME Owners Prefer Online Alternative Lenders to Traditional Ones

Online alternative lenders are gaining momentum with U.S. small businesses, specifically and unsurprisingly with those run by millennials, according to a new report by Mercator Advisory Group. According to Mercator’s report, Business Banking Services: Keeping Up with Millennial Owners, 27% of total U.S. SMEs have used online alternative lenders (P2P lenders or marketplace lending platforms) in 2017.

Consumers Increasingly Prefer to Use Debit Cards Instead of Credit Cards

Some 61% of consumers surveyed in the fourth quarter by Auriemma Consulting Group cited a debit card as their most frequently used card, up from 52% a year earlier. Only 24% named a credit card, down from 35% at the end of 2016. Debit’s popularity is growing even for big-ticket items such as appliances, another area where credit traditionally has reigned supreme.

FCC Unveils New Broadband Map, Offering More Data on US Internet Access

he US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has updated the National Broadband Map to include more relevant coverage data and new features that will make it more usable for consumers and businesses. The map is focused on fixed broadband deployments, and shows each area in a different color depending on the average number of available providers in that area. The map also lists the average broadband speed for the area.
