Snagging a new account costs roughly $200 per new account holder—higher for branch walk-ins—according to CustomerThink. (That number doesn’t even consider the cost of giving away merchandise.) But the typical new account holder generates about $150 in annual revenue, so when you add account servicing costs, it can take more than two years to break even—that is, if the account holder stays active. The author contends that effective online marketing as opposed to print advertisements and silly giveaways can cut acquisition costs in half.

Conversational Banking May Already Be Mainstream, Mastercard Says

Two out of three U.S. adults are already comfortable interacting with retailers, FIs, and other companies using natural language technology, according to a study released by Mastercard. The study found that 80% of participants are “aware” of voice-based NLP (natural language processing) services, compared to 43% for text-based services.

Biometric Identification Must Be Made Available for All Mastercard Users by April 2019

Mastercard announced that all consumers will be able to identify themselves with biometrics such as fingerprints or facial recognition, when they shop and pay with Mastercard by April next year. In practice it means that FIs issuing Mastercard-branded cards will have to be able to offer biometric authentication for remote transactions, alongside existing PIN and password verification. It will also apply to all contactless transactions made at terminals with a mobile device.

Verizon Enterprise Solutions has launched its Virtual Network Services–SBCaaS offering. The new service reflects the ongoing expansion of the telco’s SDN virtual network services suite and its customers' movement away from premises-based network solutions to cloud-based offerings. Virtual Network Services–SBCaaS, which are available with “pay-as-you-go” subscription pricing, can be deployed as a standalone option or service chained with other virtualized network functions (VNFs) to expedite enhanced security, quality of service, and regulatory compliance for IP voice and video communications.
