Dell Has a New Cloud Strategy, but It’s Still an Infrastructure Vendor

Dell announced a new service that brings the user experience for buying, installing, and using new servers on-premises as close as it can be to spinning up a VM in the cloud. Through a web portal, a data center manager selects location, specs, and number of servers they need, which kicks off the process of preparing the hardware for shipping and installing it in one or several data centers of the customer’s choice.

VMware-VeloCloud Sees the Future of SD-WAN with 5G, Hybrid Cloud

As SD-WAN, the network edge, hybrid cloud and 5G shift and mature, preparing network infrastructure and software capabilities to support these areas has become crucial, according to the GM of the VeloCloud business unit at VMware. An expanded SD-WAN platform would use data patterns and network performance information -- gleaned from thousands of customer deployments -- to detect patterns, determine fixes and automate policy changes. Although 5G networks aren't fully developed, the company believes an SD-WAN running on 5G could result in "single milliseconds kind of latency."

Cisco Drops Advanced Malware Protection for Networks into SD-WAN Console

Cisco has added its Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) for Networks into its software-defined networking-wide are network (SD-WAN) console to further beef up WAN security. Cisco's SD-WAN customers are now able to sandbox and block standard polymorphic and file-less malware across wide area networks with a few clicks on the console. AMP works with Cisco's Viptela SD-WAN technologies.
