Hardware News

Palo Alto Networks released a new addition to its firewall appliance portfolio: the PA-7050 appliance. The company claims that it is the world's fastest next generation firewall. The firm says that with full application enablement, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Anti-Virus (AV) and WildFire (virtual malware analysis) active on all traffic, the PA-7050 delivers consistent performance at speeds higher than alternative offerings.

Modern laptops do not come with a serial port, but many enterprise network devices often require initial IP address setup via a serial console. The RN-240 Firefly from Roving Networks is a handy device that can assist in configuring these critical devices. You simply plug the RN-240 Bluetooth Serial adapter into a switch, router, etc and you are able to work outside the telco closet or across the room.

Software Updates

Software compliance can be a complex and interpretative process, and now more than ever software vendors are auditing their clients. Aspera is a highly specialized provider of software license management solutions. The company says that their core product, SmartTrack, is the world's first web-based system that focuses on the management of usage rights and helps organizations avoid costly under licensing or over licensing issues.

Google and VMware are working together to market Google's Chromebooks to virtualize Windows desktops and apps via HTML5 by way of VMware Horizon View's desktop as a service. The companies are hoping that organizations opt for the Chromebook/Horizon combo as a way to replace aging Windows XP PCs but still keep running the legacy desktops and apps they need.

Unitrends offers a free, on-premises backup tool called Unitrends Enterprise Backup for as many as eight virtual machines for both VMware and Hyper-V. If you have a small environment and want to make sure you have backups of your VMs, this may be a viable option. It installs another VM from which you manage your backup.

ATMs/Kiosks

BPC Technologies has released a new cash management package that they say optimizes cash levels to free money across ATM networks. Operational costs are reduced by optimizing network monitoring, including cash load routes and frequency. They note that some ATM operators overload their machines with cash to the point where associated costs account for up to 60 percent of all operating costs.

Triton Systems announced that they will offer the Fujitsu G60 bill recycling unit in their ARGO 7 ATM. In the future, the Fujitsu G60 bill recycling units will be an option for ARGO 7 customers. The ARGO 7 ATM features a color touchscreen, and supports options such as sending SMS text, email or printed receipts.

Diebold is rolling out their first mixed-media deposit automation ATM. Fifth Third Bank has added the functionality to some of their existing Opteva 700 series ATMs. The mixed-media module accepts and validates up to 75 notes, checks or a combination of the two per deposit.

Wireless World

According to an Aite Group survey, about 32 percent of small to mid-size businesses bank via mobile devices. The research firm notes that many FIs simply offer small businesses a rebranded version of their consumer mobile banking service, with limited capabilities. They recommend that FIs should instead consider offering advanced mobile services such as initiating and approving ACH (automated clearing house) and wire transfers, which would likely prompt more small businesses to use mobile banking. They also note high levels of interest in mobile RDC among survey respondents, as well as the ability to easily reset login passwords.

Nuance is working with U.S. Bank to offer a voice biometrics option which allows consumers to access their credit card accounts on mobile devices. The technology is able to capture the unique rhythms of a person's speech and uses pattern-matching programs to identify the voice against an authenticated passphrase on file. The solution is designed to address the growing consumer dissatisfaction with PINs, passwords, and security questions.

Fiserv’s mobile POS solution, SpotPay, uses a secure card reader that works with iOS and Android mobile devices. The solution is offered in a co-branded format that permits banks to share in the interchange income. By some accounts, SpotPay is the only mobile payments product currently offered through financial institutions. The platform is looking to upgrade with new features such as RDC, and for ACCEL/Exchange customers, real-time funds availability and account transfers.

According to Gartner, by 2022, 60 percent of workers will be using cloud-based e-mail, up from 8 percent in 2013. Most organizations should evaluate their e-mail security services on these three characteristic, according to SilverSky:

- the actual security of messaging traffic

- complying with industry regulations

- dealing with the trend toward mobile and remote access to e-mail services

The security firm notes that the average American worker sends or receives 80 e-mails a day, about 5 percent of which are considered risky from a compliance and security standpoint. Companies such as Mimecast and others offer other add-on services such as e-mail archiving, e-discovery for legal and risk management, and data loss prevention technologies.

EMV chip and PIN technology is not designed to secure card-not-present payments, but single use virtual cards are specifically tailored to prevent online fraud. MasterCard has been offering single use virtual cards along with personalized security alerts, but they have not gained traction with consumers. Some industry observers think that offering virtual cards through mobile devices will be a convenient way of spurring adoption.

Cybereason is a start-up that has built a proactive security platform that helps organizations continuously monitor systems with the aim of detecting hacker actions and intentions. The company’s platform is not looking to detect malware per se, but rather the tell-tale signatures of malicious operations. The system uses profiling and big data analysis to augment and/or replace the role of the human security analyst.

Technology and Marketing

Financial institutions are reducing the number and types of checking offers in order to cut costs and improve their staffs’ ability to sell, according to Moebs Services. They found a significant reduction in the number of offerings – a maximum of 8 today with a median of 3 compared to 10 to 20 prior to the fall of 2008. The Moebs study identified four primary types of checking accounts in use: 1) Interest Checking, 2) Free Checking, 3) Senior Checking and 4) Basic Checking with a minimum balance and fee for not meeting the minimum. The research firm notes that other types of checking are being phased out with the exception of electronic checking and relationship checking, and that checking accounts cost a bank approximately $175 to over $400 a year.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

In a move designed to address gaps in the EMV standard, the Clearing House Payments Company (TCH) is pushing for broad American adoption of payment card tokenization. Tokenization is a method for protecting card data by substituting a card's Primary Account Number (PAN) with a unique, randomly generated sequence of numbers, alphanumeric characters, or a combination of a truncated PAN and a random alphanumeric sequence. With tokenization, credit and debit card data is encrypted at the point where it is captured and the actual card number itself is stored in a virtual vault with no way to link the token back to the PAN without the decryption key. EMVCo, which is owned by the card giants, has also announced plans to develop a tokenization standard for securing credit and debit card payments made via mobile handsets, tablet computers and online channels.

RBC Canada claims to be the first financial institution in North America to launch a person-to-person payments service for its mobile banking customers that offers the ability to send money via Facebook Messenger contacts from within their app. After logging in to the RBC mobile app, users click a “send money” tab with the Facebook logo, which will prompt them to log in to their Facebook accounts. After sending the money along with a short message if desired, recipients will then receive a Facebook message informing them of the transfer, which they can deposit in their own accounts with any FI via the Interac network.

EfficientIP provides hardware and software appliances to manage IP addresses and DNS-DHCP services. They claim that their SOLIDServer Hybrid DNS Engine is the first hybrid DNS that combines three DNS engines managed in one appliance, eliminating code vulnerabilities and single point of failure and enabling engines to be switched to protect service availability. When a security alert or actual cyber attack affects your currently running name server software, Hybrid DNS technology gives you alternative name server software that you can switch to with a single click. You can then revert to using the original name server software after its vulnerability has been patched, tested and verified.

Unfortunately, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks just keep getting stronger, faster, and harder to deflect. Arbor Networks’ annual Worldwide Infrastructure Security Report shows the largest attack last year registered three times the volume of DDoS attacks in previous years, and attacks against SSL-protected websites jumped nearly 20 percent. Cloudflare, a company that helps websites stay online in the face of DDoS attacks, noted recently that one of the company’s customers was hit with a nearly 400 Gbps attack that utilized NTP amplification.

Call Centers

Some contact center experts contend that social media users have much higher expectations on support response times than other consumers. The ICMI (International Customer Management Institute) recently ran a poll of their customers and the results agree with this theory:

- 71% do believe that consumers seeking social support have higher expectations

- 22% do not believe that consumers seeking social support have higher expectations

- 7% are unsure
